Eternal Sunrise Invitation
We thought it was important to share the story behind our invitation and what it all means. The invitation was created for us by our friend Dimitri. An explanation of the creation and all the different components is below:
The Text and Inspiration
The text was the foundation for the design. It was the pivotal point of
inspiration. The brevity of the poem was evocative of a haiku and set the
stage for a design based on balance and simplicity. Traditionally haiku
poems speak of nature and time, so the goal was to create a design that
embodied that idea.
Dragonfly and Vortex
The symbol of the dragonfly was a personal request by the betrothed and thus
I took it to symbolize their essence. It so happens the dragonfly is also
often the subject of haiku poems. In Japanese painting, they typically
represent joy and light. They are considered creatures of light because
their vibrant colors are the direct result of reflection and refraction.
Dragonflies are also associated with the strength of maturity as they evolve
from water nymph to flying adult. The body of the dragonfly in fiery red, is
textured by the cracked surface of a magical place in the mind’s eye
popularly known as, “the playa”. This place holds special significance in
the hearts of Liz and Dev. The dragonfly hovers above a vortex like optical
illusion. This tunnel represents time and travel, the beginning of a trip
that extends into infinity, A trip with no beginning or end, merely its
illusion. In whole the creature symbolically represents the union of all
four elements in a single being, the balance of divinity, tested by time.
The Symbols on the right hand side
On the far right are ten symbols, arranged in two columns to be read top
down. These represent the date of the union in Mayan numeric and glyph form:
12:19:14:7:12 or June 23rd 2007. The Maya were amazing astronomers, and
their feats in time keeping allow for establishing coordinates in the
dimension of time and space. Coordinates of their union in the 4th
dimension. Directly beneath the Mayan glyphs are 4 more glyphs, ancient
symbols for the sacred female and male. These are the Egyptian hieroglyphs
for the Queen Mother, Isis and her husband, Lord Osiris. The first symbol
from left to right, is the Tyet, symbol of Isis. She is the archetypal
wife and mother, giver of life. The cult of Lady Madonna evolved from Isis.
The three symbols on the right are the hieroglyphs for the “Throne of the
Eye: the symbol for Lord Osiris god of the sky. He is the just judge of the
departed, father of Horus and Anubis, and granter of life and fertility,
responsible for the sprouting of vegetation and flooding of the Nile.
Bottom Left: Bamboo and AUM (OM)
Bamboo sprouts from the bottom left hand corner behind a Tibetan Aum symbol
Bamboo is often associated with the resting place of Buddha, and the path
toward enlightenment. It is an evergreen plant, continually growing through
the winter and so is a symbol of longevity, as well as of strength and grace
as it readily bends but doesn’t break easily. Within it, the outline, or
essence, of the sacred syllables, the sound of the creation, maintenance and
destruction of the universe. It is a prayer, for this union to fulfill the
ultimate purpose in life, growth towards something beyond.
The Background
And finally, as the foundation to the whole piece, swirls in the background,
fragments of sacred geometry, and golden ratios. As geometric shapes, they
embody the amazing synchronicity between science and nature, the power of
aesthetics locked within balance and proportion. Intended to represent,
plant roots, the shapes and forms take on an infinite number of meanings.
Like the earthen counterpart to clouds, they can be anything the imagination
desires or wishes to see. As roots they are but a fragment of the sacred
tree of life and the essence of life itself, a sacred symbol to nearly every
human culture. It represents the unity of all: plant and animal, earth and
sky, male and female, cultures and religion. They may also represent our
collective history, a tribute to those who came before us, and made us who
we are today. These are but the meaning and symbols attributed by my own creativity and by
no means the entire message. The greatest metaphor is that which was not
represented, unexplained, unspoken. It is the mystery of the unknown yet to
be discovered and interpreted. Have a closer look and you may catch but a
glimpse.
